A new wildlife series featuring the Macedon Ranges’ own zoologist Chris Humfrey is about to go to air on ABC1.
The first episode of Chris Humfrey’s Wild Life will screen on Sunday, March 6 at 6.30pm.
Follow Chris in this chaotic, animal-crazy series that captures the drama, the danger, the animal antics and the sheer exhilaration of his daily life. Every day, a new saga unfolds at the zoo!
The founder of ‘Wild Action: The Zoo That Comes To You’ says filming the 13-week series was an exhausting but rewarding experience.
“It was kind of like the worst year of my life and the best year of my life at the same time,” Chris says.
“Racing around the world and working and having a family doesn’t compare to making a TV show - you just don’t realise how intense it is and the scrutiny you’re exposed to, I mean we had a TV crew basically living with us for six months and you really don’t get a break.”
Chris said that for a while the filming was going along well but then things plateaued and he became worried.
“I thought ‘who is going to want to watch this show!’, but then the babies (baby quolls) came and things took off with breeding them and then sending them off to other zoos.”
He said he was really pleased with the series at the end.
“In the end I think there is lots of good information about the animals and you really do get an insight into what our life is and what our passions are.”
Chris’ wife, Nicole, and daughters, Charlie- Ashe, 7, and Taasha, 4, are also a big part of the show.
“It is a family show and it really does depict the Macedon Ranges well ... the world really is going to see how beautiful a place it is that we live in,” Chris says.
Chris is enjoying a well-earned break before considering a second series.
Wild Action is a private zoo at Macedon with more than 2000 animals, each in need of 24-hour care and attention.
Chris and Nicole work around the clock to keep their very extended family happy and healthy and manage their enthusiastic crew of Gen Y zoo keepers/ presenters. Each week Chris will share with viewers this extraordinary life and his amazing knowledge of Australia’s fauna.
Wild Action is a thriving business that brings thousands of school kids and people from all over Victoria into direct contact with wild animals. It has an incredible collection of birds, reptiles, venomous snakes, insects, marine life, marsupials and more.
Chris has dedicated his life to preserving Australian wildlife and providing an opportunity for the public to be part of nature and experience it first hand. But family life, work life and wildlife don’t always fit neatly together!
